📋Overview
Also referred to as herpes zoster oticus, this disorder occurs when the varicella-zoster virus—the same virus responsible for chickenpox and shingles—reactivates and affects the facial nerve near the ear. It typically manifests as a painful rash and facial weakness or paralysis on the affected side.
Although the condition involves facial nerve paralysis similar to Bell's palsy, it is a distinct clinical entity defined by its viral cause and associated symptoms. In addition to the rash and paralysis, individuals may experience neurological symptoms such as vertigo or hearing loss.
