Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone and bone marrow, typically caused by bacteria or, less commonly, fungi. It can occur in any bone but most often affects long bones in children and vertebrae in adults. The term 'osteomyelitis' is the current preferred terminology; older or synonymous terms include 'bone infection.'
