This condition typically develops when an oil-producing meibomian gland becomes obstructed, leading to a slow-growing, firm lump within the upper or lower eyelid. These lesions are generally painless and result from chronic inflammation rather than an acute bacterial infection.
A chalazion is sometimes referred to as a meibomian cyst and is distinct from a stye in its underlying pathology. Clinical observation often links the development of these swellings to persistent eyelid conditions such as blepharitis.
